Kilimanjaro trekking guide
Choosing the right route for Mount Kilimanjaro is the most critical decision a trekker can make. While Kilimanjaro is a "walk-up" mountain (no technical climbing required), the success rate varies from 50% to 95% depending almost entirely on the route’s acclimatization profile.
1. Lemosho Route (The Best All-Rounder)
Widely considered the most beautiful route, Lemosho starts on the western side of the mountain. It offers a remote, wilderness feel for the first two days before joining the Machame route.
• Scenery: Spectacular. You cross the Shira Plateau and enjoy panoramic views from the west.
• Acclimatization: Excellent. The 8-day version allows for a slow ascent, making it ideal for first-time trekkers.
• Difficulty: Moderate. It includes the famous Barranco Wall scramble.
2. Machame Route (The "Whiskey" Route)
The most popular route on the mountain. It is steeper and more demanding than Marangu, hence the name "Whiskey" (stronger than "Coca-Cola").
• Scenery: Highly diverse. You pass through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert.
• Acclimatization: Very Good. Its "walk high, sleep low" profile (climbing to Lava Tower at 4,630m and sleeping at 3,900m) is perfect for altitude adjustment.
• Difficulty: High. Expect long days and steep terrain.
3. Northern Circuit (The Longest & Highest Success)
The newest route on the mountain. It follows the Lemosho path initially but then circles the remote northern slopes of the peak, offering 360^{\circ} views.
• Scenery: Unparalleled. It is the only route that visits the quiet northern side.
• Acclimatization: The Best. Because it takes 9 days, your body has the most time to adjust.
• Difficulty: Moderate. It is a long trek but the daily inclines are manageable.
4. Marangu Route (The "Coca-Cola" Route)
The oldest and most established route. It is often incorrectly labeled as the "easiest" because of its gradual slope and hut accommodations (it’s the only route where you don't sleep in tents).
• Scenery: Moderate. You ascend and descend on the same path, so you see less of the mountain.
• Acclimatization: Poor. The 5-day version has a high failure rate because it forces you to ascend too quickly.
• Difficulty: Low (technically) but High (physically) due to altitude sickness risks.
5. Rongai Route (The Northern Approach)
The only route that approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is much drier, making it the best choice during the rainy season.
• Scenery: Unique. You get a wilderness experience with views of Mawenzi Peak.
• Acclimatization: Moderate. It doesn't have many "walk high, sleep low" opportunities, so a 7-day itinerary is highly recommended.
• Difficulty: Moderate. The terrain is flatter and easier than the southern routes.
6. Umbwe Route (The Professional’s Choice)
The shortest, steepest, and most direct route. It is only recommended for very experienced hikers who are already well-acclimatized to high altitudes.
• Scenery: Dramatic and vertical.
• Acclimatization: Very Poor. The ascent is too rapid for most people.
• Difficulty: Very High. A true test of physical and mental endurance.
Essential Trekking Information
The "Walk High, Sleep Low" Rule
The secret to summiting Kilimanjaro is spending your days at higher altitudes and dropping down to sleep. This triggers your body to produce more red blood cells without the continuous stress of staying at a high altitude.
Best Time to Trek
• Dry Seasons (Best): Late June to October and late December to early March.
• Rainy Seasons: April/May (heavy rain) and November (short rains).
Success Factors
• Pace: The guides will constantly say "Pole Pole" (Slowly, Slowly). Moving slowly is the only way to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
• Gear: Quality layers (merino wool, down jackets) and broken-in waterproof boots are non-negotiable.Climbers' Stories
